We would like to thank everyone who participated in our 2020 t-shirt design competition. It was great to see the amount of creativity our community expressed and was certainly a tough decision to make!
We are pleased to announce this year’s winners:
First Place – Michaela Lucas
Michaela Lucas is a senior graphic design student at The Pennsylvania State University. She first developed an interest in scientific illustration and design through her sister, who works in computational genomics research. She plans to continue to find creative ways to blend science and design with hopes of expanding upon her experiences in scientific industries.
Second Place – Kathryn (Katie) McElhinney
Katie McElhinney works in research at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and her 20 years of hematology molecular genetics experience spans from genotyping mice to (now) GWAS in humans. She has had the privilege to work in wonderful environments surrounded by fabulous co-workers, fostering not only productivity but creativity as well.
Tied for Third Place – Mark Bieberich
Mark Bieberich is a Biomedical Engineer who has worked in medical devices and now life sciences. He works for a medium-sized private company designing components for PCR-based tests, including products that are capable of testing for COVID-19 and resulting antibodies. He plans verification and validation testing and root-cause test performance issues found by their scientists.
Tied for Third Place – Alireza Tafazoli
Alireza Tafazoli is a current Ph.D. student at Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions Fellowship (H2020-EU.1.3.4) focusing on medical biology and genomics at Medical University of Bialystok, Poland. Here, he works with high throughput sequencing data (NGS data) in the field of Pharmacogenomics. His main task is the pharmacovariants functional interpretation through diverse genomic data and their impact on drug safety and efficacy in the human body, using in-silico and in-vitro analysis.
Golden Helix tradition is to reveal the t-shirt designs during the annual ASHG conference, but with COVID-19 safety precautions in place, the conference has moved to a virtual meeting. Therefore, we will be revealing the winning designs via social media during the ASHG 2020 Virtual Meeting on October 27, 2020!
Connect with us on social to be the first to see our 2020 winning t-shirt designs, and stay up to date on everything happening here at Golden Helix!
