Golden Helix SNP & Variation Suite and VarSeq™ Software to be Used by Howard Hughes Medical Institute Professor for Education at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign

Bozeman, MT (October 07, 2014) — Today, Golden Helix, Inc. announced a collaboration with Dr. Jeffrey Moore, newly named Howard Hughes Medical Institute Professor of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Moore plans to incorporate use of Golden Helix SNP & Variation Suite (SVS) and VarSeq, a new offering from Golden Helix, into his teachings bridging organic chemistry and genetics.

SVS is an integrated collection of powerful analytic tools for managing, analyzing, and visualizing genomic and phenotypic data that can run on a desktop or laptop and does not require scripting or command-line syntax. The ability to perform high end analytics that SVS provides is important for students who are passionate about science and exploring genomic data, but do not have a computer science background.

VarSeq streamlines the process of annotating and filtering variants from massive next-generation sequencing datasets, allowing students to find variants of interest with unprecedented ease and speed.

"Our field is entering the next phase of utilizing genomic data for research and clinical purposes. Collectively, we need to think about training the next generation to do more research and create clinically actionable results", said Andreas Scherer, President and CEO of Golden Helix. "Our two flag ship products SVS and VarSeq are used on a global basis by researchers and clinicians. We are excited to collaborate with Dr. Moore to give his student access to professional tools and methods."

Dr. Moore seeks to integrate genetics into organic chemistry education to investigate the underlying causes of conditions explored in many facets of science. "My philosophy as an educator is to continually feed curiosity by creating a curriculum that is meaningful to my students as well as being modern and relevant", said Dr. Jeffery Moore, Murchison-Mallory Professor of Chemistry and Professor of Materials Science and Engineering and Howard Hughes Medical Institute Professor at the University of Illinois – Urbana-Champaign. "Genetics connects the molecular sciences with many other disciplines across the university, and I am confident that Golden Helix shares in my goal to make teaching and learning genetic analysis more accessible."
